From September 16-19, 1999 an
intensive survey program was conducted at
Oasis State Park. This was a team effort
coordinated by the New Mexico State Parks
Office using volunteers and specialists from
around the area. The survey focused on an
inventory of the biological, natural, and
cultural resources of Oasis State Park.
Approximately 200 acres were inventoried as
a result of the survey. Several events were
planned and scheduled over the four day
session, culminating in a pot-luck dinner
Saturday evening.
On Thursday and Friday evenings informal discussion sessions were held at the Blackwater Draw Museum. On Thusrday, Shawn Patch discussed historic archaeology in the Roosevelt County area, and George Crawford presented a brief overview of the history of investigations at Blackwater Locality No. 1. Friday's discussion was led by John Montgomery, director of the Blackwater Draw Site and Museum, concerning the role of Blackwater in current studies of Paleoindians.
Tours of the Natural History Museum at Eastern New Mexico University, and the Blackwater Draw Site were given to Park officials and out of town visitors.
Christy Comer, Archaeologist for the
State Parks Office, directed the cultural
resources survey, with volunteer help from
Rebecca Stoneman, Public Affairs Officer for
Cibola National Forest, David Eck,
Archaeologist for the State Land Office, and
Shawn Patch and Peter Condon, graduate
students at ENMU.
