About the ENMU Online Lithic Type Collection
This type collection was initially established as part of ENMU's Department of Anthropology and Applied Archaeology's teaching and research materials beginning in the early 1970s. The collection originally began as part of the Salmon Ruin Project. At that time a majority of the materials placed in the collection related to resources available and commonly encountered in archaeological context of the Four-Corners Region. There are hundreds of such samples in the collection. A majority of the Four-Corners samples have been excluded from this web site; however, they are made available to interested researchers and students for study. If you have a particular interest in the Four-Corners Region or a particular rock type from that part of the American Southwest, send an email to Dr. Shelley and we will see if we can add those images to the web site.
Since the 1970s, a major effort has been made to collect examples of raw materials from the Southern High Plains and adjacent regions. Please note that this web site is an on-going entity and more images will be added on a regular basis with an emphasis on finishing the regional raw materials first. Many of the samples included on the web site have more precise locational information than shown. If such precision is desired, please contact Dr. Shelley by email. /P>
Many people have contributed time, effort, and actual samples to this type collection and their help is acknowledged and appreciated. If you have any samples you would like to donate to the collection and have added to the web site, please contact us.
